There are more and more people putting up their hands for an election ticket. For some, the position of an elected leader is the epitome of a professional career; for some, it is about serving the people. As the elections near, Samoa Observer journalist Adrina Buckhart and photojournalist Junior S Ami spoke to people about what qualities they looked for in a candidate.
"A candidate who loves their family, village and has done many good things for the village and its people. Someone who works for the government and the village people."
"I am ready to vote for a candidate who is good and lends a helping hand to my village, most especially for my village Aumaga Taulelea Group."
"The candidate from Lufilufi is someone who loves and cares for the people of your village and districts, which is why i am ready to vote for him in the upcoming elections."
"For me, I follow whatever candidate my husband votes for, this person is someone who does good things for the people and the whole district, such as improving services that are needed, and much more."
"I believe we need candidates who love our country and are willing to serve truthfully with their words and their actions for the greater future of Samoa now and in the future. We should choose wisely for a candidate who will bring good change and a future for us rather than being a candidate giving out money for votes. As money will be gone instantly, but the Lord wants us to do what is right for the future of families, children and country."
"I have not made up my mind as to whom I'll vote for this year's elections; choosing whom to vote for is a free choice. We need someone who will strongly help our people when we need help, especially those in villages and districts. We should be able to turn to them for help and they should be able to make the effort to help those in need."
